Northern Velebit National Park
The Velebit is without doubt the most prominent natural landmark of the area where Lukovo is located. Nevertheless, the wild mountain has always provided a wealth of resources for its inhabitants, thus by visiting the Northern Velebit National Park you will witness the unique human-nature relationship established here since prehistory. Hiking and trekking lovers will find here a wealth of trails to explore, while even less experienced nature lovers will be able to reach scenic areas and witness Velebit’s unique views towards the sea.
We suggest you start your visit from the House of the Velebit in the village of Krasno, where you can learn about nature and history of the Velebit, and plan your visit to the park.
Senj old town
Established as a town during the Roman period, over the centuries Senj was the most important city and port of this part of the Adriatic. This has left a mark on its architecture and cultre, and visiting the old town will give you a glimpse in its rich history. Don’t miss the cathedral, its catacombs and the Senj town museum.
Nehaj fortress
Early modern history of Senj was marked by the Uskoks – guerilla soldiers fighting the Ottoman wars on behalf of the Habsburgs. One of the most prominent monuments of the Uskok era is the Nehaj fortress located just outside Senj, on a scenic hilltop overlooking the town. Built in 1558, the fortress can be visited, and the small exhibition will provide you with interesting information on the Uskoks and Senj.
Sveti Juraj
This picturesque town is located just 15 min from Lukovo by car. Inhabited since prehistory, it is here that the Roman town of Lopsica was founded in 1st century AD, thus below the ruins of the 13th century church of st. Philip and Jacob a Roman thermal complex was found.
Zavratnica cove
Located some 20 km from Lukovo towards south, Zavratnica is a 900 long cove formed by the flooding of a canyon. It can be visited through two trails – one along the cove, one above it, boosting scening views.
The cove is part of the Velebit natural park, thus a small fee is required to enter it.
